Thodupuzha: Catholic Church's Kothamangalam diocese has decided to reinstate Prof T J Joseph, who was dismissed from the job over a controversial question paper, on humanitarian grounds before the date of his retirement on March 31.

The Church prevailed on the management of Newman College in Thodupuzha where Joseph worked as Malayalam lecturer to reinstate him to the post.

Joseph was dismissed from the college after his hand was chopped off allegedly by PFI activists in July 2010 over a controversial question paper prepared by him.

Without a job, Joseph's family was pushed into dire financial straits and unable to take it any longer his wife Salomi committed suicide on Wednesday.

The order to reinstate Joseph, issued within three days of her death, states that it will be "subject to the approval of the Government and MG University".
