Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Ommen Chandy Wednesday said the statement made by BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on the issue of Italian marines was baseless and unsubstantiated.
Terming Mr Modi’s statement as unfortunate, Mr. Chandy said he should bring forth the evidences to substantiate his allegations.
“If he does not have any evidence to substantiate his allegations, I urge him to withdraw the statements immediately and tender a public apology for making such baseless allegation aimed at cheap publicity and electoral gain,” Mr. Chandy said in a statement.
Hitting back at Sonia Gandhi over her patriotism jibe, Narendra Modi on Monday had said that people of the country did not need a certificate from her and attacked her over the Italian marines issue, questioning at whose behest they were given a chance to leave the country.
“Who was it at whose behest the government in Delhi gave the marines a chance to go back to Italy?” Mr. Modi had asked.
Had the Supreme Court not taken a strong stand on the matter, the marines would not have come back, he had said.
