High Court for probe into Satnam’s mysterious death

Kochi: The Kerala High Court on Thursday observed there should be a transparent probe into the mysterious death of Satnam Singh.

While considering a petition filed by Satnam’s father seeking a CBI probe, the court said an independent and impartial probe should be conducted into the incident.

Calling the ongoing crime branch probe into the death of Satnam Singh a mockery, Satnam's father had approached the High Court seeking a fresh probe by the CBI.

The relatives of Satnam Singh had also met Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to press for a CBI probe into the circumstances of death of Satnam Singh.

Twenty three -year-old Satnam, who was a student of the Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University in Lucknow, died in August, 2012 at the mental health centre in Thiruvananthapuram.

Satnam had been arrested from the Ashram of Matha Amrithanandamayi, when the Ashram security mistook him for a militant. As he broke line and advanced to the Mata while she was giving darshan, they suspected it to be an attempt to attack her, immobilized him and handed him over to the Karunagappally police.

Later, Satnam was shifted to the mental health centre in Thiruvananthapuram and was found dead in his cell. He was suspected to have been thrashed either by the police, or by the staff or the inmates of the mental health centre.
