Thodupuzha: The 12-hour hartal, called by the LDF Idukki district committee, to protest against the limited time for preparing Cadastral map of the district for identifying Ecologically Sensitive Areas has begun.
The hartal is being observed from 6 am to 6 pm. Essential services have been exempted from the purview of the shut-down.
Although the LDF had originally announced the hartal for Wednesday, that was amended to facilitate the conduct of entrance examination to professional courses.
The High Range Samrakshana Samithi (HRSS) has also lent its support to the hartal.
The demands of the protesters include allotting sufficient time to prepare Ecologically Sensitive Areas (ESA) map, to convene an all-party meet to revolve uncertainty among the farmers about the project, to allot sufficient time to the farmers to scan through the Cadastral map after its publishing, and to bring out the final affidavit only after resolving the complaints.
