Geithner to visit India June 27-28 for economic talks

Washington: Focusing on growing India-US economic ties, US Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner will travel to India June 27-28 for the third annual meeting of the US-India Economic and Financial Partnership.

After the annual economic talks with Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in New Delhi June 27, Geithner will visit Mumbai to meet with Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Duvvuri Subbarao and also meet with Indian business leaders from a variety of industries.

Announcing the visit Monday, US treasury department said the US-India Economic and Financial Partnership has served as a platform for greater cooperation on economic issues of importance to both nations.

Both countries recognise the importance of expanding bilateral economic engagement, noting the rapid growth of US-India economic ties and the increasing range of global macroeconomic and financial issues on which the United States and India cooperate, it said.

Partnership activities over the last three years have focused on three broad areas - macroeconomic policy, the financial sector and infrastructure financing.

In addition to talking about these activities, Geithner will also discuss issues related to illicit finance, including the implementation of international sanctions, the treasury said.

While Mukherjee and Geithner have led annual cabinet-level meetings, alternately held in the US and India, working group meetings held throughout the year have advanced discussions on specific economic areas.
