Kochi: A youth, who had been imprisoned in Abu Dhabi after he was trapped by drug mafia in Kerala, was released from the jail on Thursday.
A resident of Pizhala, Kadamakkudi in Ernakulam district, Shiju Thomas was trapped by the drug peddlers who used him to smuggle Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD) to Abu Dhabi from Kerala.
Shiju was released after the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi took up the matter and succeeded in convincing the authorities there of his innocence. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had also met Foreign Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj seeking Centre’s intervention for the release of the youth.
The police had already arrested the key accused Amal, who used Shiju to send LSD, consigned inside a book, to one Sarang, who had been working at a private firm in Abu Dhabi.
The crime came to light after Shiju was arrested at the Abu Dhabi airport for carrying nine LSD stamps inside a text book on June 18. The book was allegedly given by Amal for handing over to Sarang. Shiju was not aware of the presence of the LSD inside the book.
On a complaint filed by Shiju’s parents, the Aluva police registered a case, and arrested Amal, Muhammed Saad and Thoppil Ansar under various sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
