Beijing: Even though China boasts a fairly large economy, it is still a developing nation where more than 100 million people live below the poverty line, Premier Wen Jiabao has said.

Wen made the remarks Wednesday at the high-level roundtable of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20 summit) in Brazil's Rio de Janeiro city, the China Daily reported Thursday.

He said China's per capita income ranks around 90th in the world.

The country faces an uphill task in promoting sustainable development, Wen said.

"Moreover, pressure from resources and the environment continues to mount, and problems of unbalanced, uncoordinated and unsustainable development remain challenging," the premier said.
