New York: The New York Times Co. has pinned high hopes on outgoing BBC head Mark Thompson to grow its digital and global businesses by announcing him new CEO late Tuesday.
Thompson, 55, is expected to start his new role in November, and will report to the board of directors and Arthur Sulzberger, chairman of the Times Company, the US media giant said in a statement.
Thompson expressed his happiness at the new position, saying: "The New York Times is one of the world's greatest news providers and a media brand of immense future potential both in the US and around the world."
"It is a real privilege to be asked to join the Times Company as it embarks on the next chapter in its history," he said.
The New York Times is eager to get Thompson on board, said Sulzberger.
