Thiruvananthapuram: The Principal Sessions Court here Thursday sent to the gallows Rajesh Kumar, accused in the murder of Class 10 student Arya, a native of Vattappara near here in March last.
Principal Sessions Judge B. Sudheendrakumar awarded the death penalty to Rajesh Kumar who raped the 15-year-old victim and murdered her March 6, 2012 when she was alone in her house.
The court had Tuesday pronounced Rajesh Kumar guilty of murder, rape and theft.
After the verdict, the victim's mother told reporters: "Capital punishment is what the murderer deserved and we prayed for it also. He did not deserve anything less.
Rajesh Kumar, a native of Kattakkada, was arrested a week after Arya, a Class 10 student, was found murdered in her home on March 6, 2012. It was later found that Rajesh, an autorickshaw driver, had gained entry into the girl’s home on the pretext of getting tools to repair his vehicle, which had developed a snag right outside her home. He was charged to have raped, then strangled the girl and later made off with her ornaments.
After his arrest on March 13, 2012, the police submitted a charge sheet within three months and trial began in November last.
