Thiruvananthapuram: Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan Friday urged the Election Commission to take immediate steps to disqualify United Democratic Front (UDF) legislators, particularly those belonging to the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), in the light of reports that they had submitted false election expenditure returns to the commission.
Basing his demand on the disclosure that the Congress had paid every IUML and Kerala Congress(M) contestant in the last Assembly election Rs.10 lakh each, Achuthanandan said the MLAs belonging to the IUML and other parties had lost the moral right to remain in the House.
According to reports emanating from the national capital, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) had stated in its returns to the Election Commission that it had paid Rs.10 lakh to each of the United Democratic Front (UDF) candidates in Kerala. Although this included the IUML candidates as well, none of them had made any mention of this component in their poll expenditure statements.
