Monorail project to begin in Kozhikode this year: Chandy

Kozhikode: The state government would begin construction work on the Monorail project in this city this year, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said here Saturday.

Speaking after inaugurating the year-long Golden jubilee celebration of Kozhikode Corporation, he said once the two monorail projects at Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram and the metro rail project at Kochi became a reality then the traffic congestion In these cities could be solved permanently.

He said in principle sanction for the monorail projects at Kozhikode and thiruvananthapuram has been received.

Chandy said traffic congestion and waste disposal are the two acute problems faced by corporations and panchayats in the state. The government was extending financial assistance to the corporations in solving such problems as they do not have the financial capacity, he said.

Chandy said that the government had sanctioned Rs 40 crore for modernisation of roads under the kozhikode corporation limits.

He said government was making efforts to improve the drinking water distribution with the help of the Centre.

Kozhikode Mayor Prof A K Premajam, presided.

Former mayors of Kozhikode corporation were felicitated on the occasion.
