Kozhikode: Private bus drivers and crew under the aegis of Motor Thozhilali Samyukta Samara Samithi, a combine of bus workers under different political parties, have called for an indefinite strike from Monday demanding better wages and working conditions.
The bus workers, numbering nearly 60, 000, are demanding that they be given a 50 per cent raise, meaning a raise of 50 per cent of the total basic pay and dearness allowance.
The bus workers said four rounds of conciliatory talks had failed. They were now getting an average of Rs. 400 a day, which was inadequate considering the rampant price rise, the striking workers said in a statement.
Mean while, the state government has decided to hold talks with the striking workers on Tuesday. Labour Minister Shibu Baby John is expected to participate in the talks.
The Calicut University has postponed all its examinations scheduled to be held from Monday in the wake of the strike called by the private bus workers.
