Malappuram: The 53rd State School Arts Festival, tipped to be the largest such in Asia got a colourful start in Malappuram on Monday.

A ceremonial procession from the Malappuram Kottappady Stadium to the main venue at the MSP Ground was held as a prelude to the inaugural function.

Chief minister Oommen Chandy inaugurated the cultural event at the Malabar Special Police Ground. Minister for Education P.K Abdurabb presided over the function.

The week-long festival will see 14 new events heightening the sense of drama and excitement among nearly 10,000 students from 85 schools across the State. As many as 17 venues, including MSP Parade Ground, Kottappadi Ground, Municipal Town Hall, St. Gemma’s HSS, GBHSS (Down Hill) and Rose Lounge, will host the festival.

Starting Tuesday, organizers will stage 'cultural evenings' at Kottakkunnu Open Air Auditorium during which poet Akkitham Achuthan Namboothiri, Padmashree Dr P K Varrier, writer C Radhakrishnan, historian Dr P Gangadharan, and actor Nilambur Ayisha would be honoured for their contributions to the state's cultural kitty. The youth fest will also witness a Sanskrit and Arabic Lit Fest.

Leader of the Opposition V.S Achuthanandan will inaugurate the valedictory session on January 20 afternoon.
