Chandy inaugurates science institute in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy Thursday inaugurated an institution in Kottayam to foster research in science and mathematics and vowed to provide facilities for world class research in Kerala.

The Srinivasa Ramanujan Institute for Basic Sciences (SRIBS) has been designed as a higher-level capacity building initiative by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE).

"This research-centric institution came into being at a time when the state is witnessing an upsurge of interest' in science education," he said, inaugurating the institute.

"We need to look at the future, provide facilities for world class research and implement globally accepted quality parameters," he said.

The institute is housed at the Rajiv Gandhi Institute for Technology campus at Kottayam and will offer training in the frontier areas of sciences, through winter and summer schools.

It will conduct webinars and web-based interaction between eminent scientists in different areas of science across the globe.

Chandy also opened a national colloquium on crystallography at the institute.
