Satnam had been arrested from the Ashram of Matha Amrithanandamayi on August 1, when the Ashram security mistook him for a militant. As he broke line and advanced to the Mata while she was giving darshan, they suspected it to be an attempt to attack her, immobilized him and handed him over to the Karunagappally police.

Later, Satnam was shifted to the mental health centre in Thiruvananthapuram and was found dead in his cell. He was suspected to have been thrashed either by the police, or by the staff or the inmates of the mental health centre.
