Kannur: Kerala police personnel and specially trained commandos intensified their searches on the Kerala-Karnataka border areas after confirming the presence of five Maoists, including a woman, in the area.
Hundreds of armed personnel, including 60 'Thunderbolt' commandos led the operations in the Tirunelly forest area, assisted by officials of forest department, police said.
The presence of the Maoists at Kanjirakolly and Chittari in Kannur area was confirmed by top police officials in the district. Some excise officials who had been to Chittari had also reported seeing them.
Meanwhile one person was taken into custody at Manathavady area in Wayanad for reportedly distributing leaflets of 'Porattam,' an extremist left group.
Police stations in border areas of Kannur have been put on high alert and patrolling intensified in Peringome, Iritty, Korikottakkari and Payyavur.
The special anti-naxal commando wing of Karnataka police is also continuing combing operations on their side, police said.
