Ambedkars message has abiding relevance, says Ansari

New Delhi: Bhim Rao Ambedkar was an astute political leader, constitutionalist, jurist, economist, thinker and a transformational social reformer whose philosophy had an abiding relevance, vice president Hamid Ansari said Friday.

Releasing three volumes of "Ambedkar Speaks" at a function here, Ansari said Ambedkar played a seminal role in the drafting the constitution.

The trilogy has been edited by Planning Commission member Narendra Jadhav.

"The life and work of Dr. Ambedkar is a testament of his tireless fight against the abhorrent practice of untouchability and the unjust caste system on behalf of the oppressed and the poor. His emphasis on dignity, unity, freedom and rights for all citizens, and particularly the less fortunate segments of our people is adequately reflected in the Constitution," Ansari said.

The vice president said Ambedkar's views on democracy, social and economic justice, gender equality, national unity and religious belief provide important inputs in quest for finding solutions to some of the demanding questions of times.

"Ambedkar's philosophy and message has an abiding relevance," the vice president said.

External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said that the three volumes were very timely and would give an opportunity to rediscover one of the brightest persons in India's firmament.

"If we look at the past in captive manner, it can lead to disaster," Khurshid said.

"How many conflicts he had anticipated and found resolutions," he said about Ambedkar.

Khurshid said the trilogy was in the "nature of scripture" to him and he would return to it time and again.

Jadhav said the trilogy was "the first attempt at a systematic study of all speeches attributed to Ambedkar."

Desrcibing Ambdedkar as "intellectual colossus", Jadhav said 537 of his speeches in Marathi and English had been presented in the complete biography of which 500 had been analysed.

Jadhav said 301 seminal speeches had been presented in full with succinct contextualisation.

"No other book has given me so much intellectual delight and satisfaction," Jadhav said.

The book has been published by Konark Publishers.
