Prime accused in Delhi gangrape commits suicide in Tihar jail

New Delhi: The main accused in the Dec 16 gang-rape of a 23-year-old has committed suicide in Delhi's Tihar Jail Monday morning, police said.

According to a police official, Ram Singh, 33, the prime accused in the case committed suicide around 5.00 a.m. in ward no. 5 of Jail No.3 in Tihar jail.

"An inquiry has been ordered into the suicide incident to ascertain how Ram Singh committed suicide in the high security Tihar Jail," said G. Sudhakar, DIG (Prisons), Tihar Jail .

There are conflicting reports from within the jail about whether Ram Singh, 33, was alone in his cell when he allegedly hanged himself. Some officials said he used his own clothes for his suicide.

"What do you mean killed himself? He has been killed in prison," said Ram Singh's lawyer, AP Singh, to news agency AFP.

Ram Singh's family wants a CBI inquiry to determine how he died. His parents, who are from Rajasthan, say they met with him recently and he shared that he was beaten up when he was first brought to prison, and mistreated by other inmates.

Ram Singh's family says police officials did not allow them to visit him in jail, so they spoke to him at court. They are worried about Mukesh's safety now and allege that he was declared innocent of the charges against him by Ram Singh.

Singh, who had been charged in 13 cases in connection with the Dec 16 incident, had been facing day-to-day trial in a district court. He was supposed to be taken to the court Monday.

He had confessed to the crime, police said.

Singh was rushed to Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital where he was declared dead.

On Dec 16, 2012, a trainee phyisotherapist was allegedly brutally gang-raped by Ram Singh and his five associates in a moving bus in the national capital.

She died of her injuries in a Singapore hospital two weeks later.
