Rome: Actor-director Giorgio Albertazzi, who was a prominent part of the Italian theatre for more than six decades, is dead. He was 92.

Albertazzi died on Saturday in his native Tuscany, reports hollywoodreporter.com.

Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi remembered him as "a great Italian" and "an artist who was classical and progressive simultaneously."

Italian President Sergio Mattarella said: "With Giorgio Albertazzi we have lost one of the foremost artists of the theatre and contemporary Italian cinema. His interpretations of the great classics remain a milestone in the history of entertainment."

Albertazzi, son of a bricklayer, was born in Fiesole, near Florence, where he studied acting and made his stage debut in 1949 with a small part in Shakespeare’s “The Tragedy of Troilus and Cressida”.

Some of the films in which Albertazzi starred includes “The Rage”, “I Married You for Fun” and “Last Year at Marienbad”.

He is survived by his wife Pia de’ Tolomei.
