Actor-filmmaker Pratap Pothen passes away at 69

Popular Malayalam actor and filmmaker Prathap Pothen passed away in Chennai on Friday, 15 July, morning, as per media reports. He was 69. The actor was found dead in his Chennai apartment.

The actor's last film Barroz, starring Mohanlal, is yet to be released.

Born in Thiruvananthapuram, he has acted in more than 100 films in Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu. He has also made his mark as a producer and screenplay writer.

Prathap made his debut with director Bharatan's 1978 movie Aaravam. Some of his popular Malayalam movies include Thakaram, Aarohanam, Panneer Pushpangal, Thanmathra. He directed three films in Malayalam - Rithubhedam, Daisy and Oru Yathramozhi.

He won a National Award for directing the 1985 film Meendum Oru Kaathal Kathai.

Among his last films were CBI 5: The Brain and the upcoming Mohanlal directorial Barroz: Guardian of D'Gama's Treasure. In Tamil, he was last seen in Ponmagal Vandhal and he had a cameo in Tughlaq Darbhar.

Pratap was known for his peculiar dialogue delivery, adding depth to his often offbeat characters, even when he played insufferable villains, like in 22 Female Kottayam.

Pratap Pothen married actor Raadhika Sarathkumar in 1985 but the couple separated in 1986. He was then married Amala Satyanath but the couple separated in 2012.
