Disney+ Hotstar lose HBO content, Viewers say "reduce subscription price"
text_fieldsMumbai: Disney+ Hotstar will not have HBO syndicated content by the end of March 2023. The Last of Us, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Game of Thrones, Industry, Watchmen, The Wire, and Veep are popular HBO titles on the platform.
HBO and Star India partnered with Indian company Hotstar in 2015. In April 2020, Walt Disney Company purchased 20th Century Studios and the OTT platform was renamed to Disney+ Hotstar.
The on-demand video streaming company has also lost the rights for the Indian Premier League and streaming rights for Formula 1 in 2023 due to F1 TV Pro's emergence. "You can continue enjoying Disney+ Hotstar's vast library of content spanning over 100,000 hours of TV Shows and Movies in 10 languages and coverage of major global sporting events," said Disney+ Hotstar.
After the OTT platform announced the developments on Twitter, many viewers demanded that the company lower the subscription price. People who paid for an annual subscription are more upset. Many also asked for a refund saying most of the good shows on Hotstar are HBO shows.
Some also called it "a loss". Some said subscribing to both HBO and Hottar is expensive and they are now forced to make a choice. Some are also speculating that HBO has a partnership with Amazon Prime Video and HBO content will probably be moved to Prime. If that happens, it will pose a threat to Hotstar.
