Kajol clarifies "uneducated political leaders" comment, highlights importance of education
text_fieldsMumbai: Bollywood actress Kajol offered clarification for her comments about political leaders lacking an educational background after she received severe backlash over it.
She emphasised that her intention was not to demean any politician but to highlight the significance of education. The renowned actress, known for her iconic films in the 1990s, took to Twitter to address the issue and express her viewpoint. In her tweet on Saturday evening, Kajol wrote, "I was merely making a point about education and its importance. My intention was not to demean any political leaders, we have some great leaders who are guiding the country on the right path."
The controversy arose from a recent interview with an online media portal, where Kajol was asked about certain ideas that hinder the progress of women despite advancements in the country. She said, "Change, especially in a country like India, is slow. It is very, very slow because we are steeped in our traditions and thought processes and, of course, it has to do with education. You have political leaders who do not have an educational system background." The 48-year-old actor further added, "I'm sorry but I'm going to go out and say that. I'm being ruled by leaders, so many of them, who do not have that viewpoint, which I think education does give you, at least the chance to look out for a different viewpoint."
Following the viral video clip of the interview, social media users took to various platforms to criticise Kajol's remarks. Some users targeted her educational background, referring to her decision to quit school and pursue a career in films.
However, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi came to Kajol's defence, stating that the actress is entitled to her opinion. Chaturvedi tweeted, "So Kajol says we are governed by leaders who are uneducated and have no vision. Nobody outraging since it's her opinion, not necessarily a fact, and also has named nobody, but all Bhakts are outraged. Please don't Yale your Entire Political Science knowledge."
Kajol's clarification aimed to convey that her comments were focused on highlighting the importance of education rather than belittling any specific political leader. The actress also acknowledged the presence of exceptional leaders guiding the country on the right path.
