Chennai: A complaint has been lodged against Kamal Haasan's new song 'Pathala Pathala', which was released on May 12. The song is from director Lokesh Kangaraj's upcoming film Vikram, featuring Kamal, Vijay Sethupathi and Fahadh Faasil and is yet to be release. Haasan sang the song that is in the spotlight, along with penning a few lines of the lyrics. The song composed by Anirudh Ravichander has already garnered 10 million views on YouTube.

According to the Times of India, Selvam, a social activist, who is a resident of Korukkupettai, made the complaint. The complaint was against the lyrics of the song 'Pathala Pathala', which according to the complainant mocked the Union Government, portraying their COVID-19 management and its funds in the exchequer unfavourably. The problematic lines of the lyrics, according to Selvam are, "Gajanaale kaasillae, Kallalaiyum kaasillae. Kaaichal joram neraiya varudhu, Thillalangadi thillalae. Ondriyathin thapaalae, Onniyum illa ippaalae. Saavi ippo thirudan kaila,Thillangadi thillalae", which roughly translates to "There is no money left in the treasury. At a time when fever and diseases are on the rise. Because of the mistakes of the centre (Union government), there's nothing left now. The key now lies with the thief", with reference to The News Minute.

On May 12, Selvam lodged the complaint with the Chennai police commissioner's office stating that he would approach the Madras High Court if the police failed to take action against the actor. This is not the first time that controversy surrounded Kamal Haasan's movies. Virumaandi (2004) and Vishwaroopam I (2013) are two such movies that were in the spotlight prior to their theatrical release.

'Kandasamy Madasamy' and 'Alwarpetta Aandava' are songs that have been sung by Haasan. 'Pathala Pathala' is similar to those songs. Anirudh Ravichander on May 9, before the song was released, tweeted, "Ulaganayagan @ikamalhaasan sir writes and sings #PathalaPathala. What a session! Thank you sir. #Vikram first single from May 11th day after. @Dir_Lokesh @RKFI (sic)."
