Keeping mum against boycott trends was mistake: Arjun Kapoor

New Delhi: Bollywood actor Arjun Kapoor told Bollywood Hungama in an interview that it was the film industry's mistake to be silent on the boycott trends of recent times, NDTV reported.

Arjun said that the only way to deal with it is to stay together as an industry.

The boycott trend on Bollywood films apparently started with Aamir Khan's 'Laal Singh Chaddha' it continued on to Akshay Kumar's 'Raksha Bandhan' and Hrithik Roshan's yet to release 'Vikram Vedha'.

Arjun said that because they were silent out of decency, people started taking advantage of it. Thinking that filmmakers' work will speak for them was a mistake, he said.

"You know you don't always need to get your hand dirty, but I guess we tolerated it a lot, and now people have made this a habit," NDTV quoted Arjun.

He said that the industry must come together and do something about the matter since what people are writing and hashtagging about them is far from the truth.

He said that the "cancel" culture is unfair and is happening a lot now. He said that audience used to be excited for new releases, which is not the situation now. There was spark, euphoria, excitement etc., in people on Friday mornings, which is when fresh releases occur, but all these are lacking lustre nowadays. People have been throwing mud on them for years now, but they always hope people's perception change after films' release, he said.

Laal Singh Chaddha is believed to be gathered the boycott campaign because of Aamir Khan's alleged statement in a 2015 interview that his ex-wife Kiran Rao suggested that there is rising intolerance in the country.

Netizens apparently exhumed four-year-old Kanika Dhillon, the writer of Akshay Kumar starrer Raksha Bandhan, which led to the cancellation campaign on the film. Further, Hrithik Roshan's Vikram Vedha faced the campaign just because he praised Lal Singh Chaddha.
