Kochi: Malayalam film industry made a comeback in 2022 after being hit with the pandemic slumber for two years. The box office saw over 186 new releases and the domestic box office alone collected Rs 468 crores.

This is a 180% growth from 2021 which is a remarkable feat considering the box office was only open for six months in 2022.

However, the number of hits was down from 2019 and only 14 films ended up being HITs. Three of them went on to become superhits and another three went on to become blockbusters.

The highest grosser of 2022 was Mammotty starrer Bheeshma Parvam that set the record for the biggest opening weekend at the Kerala box office. It went on to become the third highest-grossing film in Mollywood, both domestically and worldwide. Hridayam starring Pranav Mohanlal crossed Rs 50 crores mark worldwide and was among the top ten grossers ever. The third blockbuster was Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey with Rs 31.50 crores.

Mollywood's three super hits of 2022 are Jana Gana Mana (Rs. 13.50 crores), Thallumaala (Rs. 12 crores), and Nna Thaan Case Kodu (Rs. 9.25 crores). Eight movies - Kaduva (Rs. 11 crores), Rorschach (Rs. 9.70 crores), Paapaan (Rs. 8.20 crores), Malikappuram (Rs. 5 crores plus expected), Koomam (Rs. 4.20 crores), Jo & Jo (Rs. 3.90 crores), Palthu Janwar (Rs. 3.70 crores), and Super Shanaya (Rs. 2.90 crores) - were hits.
