New Delhi: Prime Minister joined legions of movie fans showering birth day wishes on Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan as the towering actor turns 80 years on Tuesday.

PM Modi referred to the star as "one of India's most remarkable film personalities", adding that the actor enthralled audiences across generations.

May he lead a long and healthy life. @SrBachchan," read the tweet, according to a report in NDTV.

Amitabh Bachchan, born in 1942 in Allahabad to Hindi poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan and Teji Bachchan, donned many hats in Bollywood movies from successful actor to film producer to popular television host to infrequent playback singer.

Beginning with the movie 'Saat Hindustani' in 1969, he went on to ensnare fans with his noted 'Anand' (1971), 'Zanjeer' (1973) and Deewar (1975).

A dominant star in the late 1970s through 80s, Bachchan has a large body of works to his name becoming what critics say 'one-man industry' in his prime days.

Acting over 200 films, he bagged many prestigious awards including Dadasaheb Phalke Award aside from National Film Awards for best actor.

He kept millions across India glued to TV for his most successful game show Kaun Banega Crorepati. His baritone drawl lured people to watch the show the way it spellbound fans in the threatres.

Bachchan made cameo appearance alongside notable roles in a slew of Hollywood movies taking his acting skills beyond Indian boundaries.

As the actor turns octogenarian, daughter Shweta Bachchan poured out a heartfelt message to her "grand old man "on social media, according to NDTV.
