Mumbai: Bollywood actress Neena Gupta recently said it is not necessary to believe in feminism or the idea that women are equal to men.

During an interview with Ranveer Allahbadia on his podcast, 'Darr Ke Aage Jeet Hai,' Gupta expressed her thoughts on feminism, asserting that she doesn't believe in the idea of women being equal to men. She also called the movement "faltu" (useless).

"Men and women are not equal. The day men start getting pregnant, that day we will be equal," she added.

She also emphasised the significance of financial independence and focusing on one's work, highlighting that being a housewife is a crucial role and advised boosting self-esteem. "If you are a housewife, don't look down on it. It is an important role. Boost your self-esteem and avoid thinking of yourself as small."

Gupta also shared her personal experience, acknowledging the importance of men in women's lives.

She recounted an incident where she faced discomfort while alone in the early hours. She was followed by a man and had to miss a flight in order to prioritise safety. The next day, she had a male friend accompany her to feel safe. She underlined the need for a man's presence and assistance, citing it as a practical necessity.

Gupta's viewpoints on feminism drew varied responses on social media platforms.

Some applauded her for her boldness and honesty. Actresses like Tannaz Irani and Sunita Rajwar commended Gupta for leading her life on her terms and praised her daughter's pride in her achievements. Fans expressed admiration for her authentic and straightforward approach.

However, there were dissenting opinions regarding Gupta's stance on feminism. Some disagreed with her view, stating that feminism isn't about biological aspects but revolves around equal rights and opportunities.

Many responded to her by saying that she is confusing feminism and fake feminism.

One user clarified that feminism is not about men being pregnant or women's bodybuilding. It is about equal rights and opportunities. One comment added that "feminism is not faltu (useless), but fake feminism is useless."

Another user slammed Gupta for misinterpreting and misappropriating the ideology of feminism.
