Mumbai: Bollywood actor Rajkummar Rao, known for his versatile performances, is set to play iconic freedom fighter Bhagat Singh.

He, in 2017, had received praise for his portrayal of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose in the direct-to-digital series "Bose: Dead or Alive".

According to industry sources, Rajkummar Rao is deeply passionate about the project and eagerly looks forward to portraying the revolutionary icon. The project is currently in the early stages of development, with a team of writers dedicated to researching pivotal episodes from Bhagat Singh's life. Rajkummar himself is actively involved in the script development process, considering it as a personal pet project.

The project surrounding Bhagat Singh is being planned for a leading digital platform. However, the team is determined to present the story in a unique and unprecedented manner. Rather than opting for the conventional film format, they are exploring the long-form format, aiming to create content that stands apart. As the project is still in its early development stage, the writing process alone is expected to take another 6 to 8 months, reported Pinkvilla.

Bhagat Singh, an influential figure in India's freedom struggle, has been portrayed on screen several times before. In 2002, Ajay Devgn and Bobby Deol depicted the role of Bhagat Singh in the films "The Legend of Bhagat Singh" and "23 March 1931: Shaheed," respectively. Ajay Devgn's portrayal was particularly lauded, earning him a National Film Award for his iconic performance.

While Rajkummar Rao is busy with preparations for his Bhagat Singh project, he is also set to commence shooting for "Stree 2" in July. This horror comedy will reunite him with Shraddha Kapoor, and it will feature Varun Dhawan in an extended appearance as Bhediya.
