Shahid Kapoor says marriage is about woman fixing the man, receives backlash
text_fieldsMumbai: Bollywood actor Shahid Kapoor said that men are a mess until they get married and the woman fixes him. He was speaking at the promotional event of his film Blood Daddy.
He said: "I finally have figured this out that this entire marriage thing is just about one thing you know. It's that the guy was a mess and the woman came in to fix him. So the rest of this life is going to be a journey of being fixed and becoming a decent person. That pretty much is what life is about," reported Film Companion.
He was asked which of his avatar wife Mira Rajput likes the best. Shahid answered that it is a question Mira should answer. "I hope she likes some avatar of mine."
The couple got married in 2015 and has since then become the poster child of arranged marriage. Mira was only 20 at the time and Shahid was in his early 30s.
His remark has received some backlash and many netizens said that his idea of marriage is feeding into the orthodox narrative that a woman's role is to help her husband. Some said that it is not a woman's responsibility to fix a man and it is not healthy for a marriage to revolve around him. Some also called him a manchild and asked if he thinks marriage is about raising a man-child.
"What was your mother's job? Didn't she raise you well? Come on guys grow up and girls are not born to nurse a grown-up man," commented one user. "If she’s your babysitter, you have a nanny, not a wife," said another. Someone said that Shahid's words sound like he is from the 1300s.
Shahid was a guest on Koffee With Karan 7 last year and said that marrying Mira was the best thing that happened in his life. "I feel she brings so much into my world and she balances me out and she makes me feel very normal and we have beautiful children. And I am very thankful for that."
