The purpose of 'Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway' is bigger than box office success, says Rani Mukerji

Mumbai: Ahead of the release of her film Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway, Bollywood actress Rani Mukerji said that the purpose of the film is much bigger than box office success.
The film is based on the true story of Sagarika Chakraborty whose children were taken away by the Norwegian Childcare system (Barnevernet) in 2011 on the grounds of improper treatment of children. Later, the authorities were criticised for being culturally blind. She had to fight a two-year-long legal battle to regain custody of her children.
Speaking about the role, Rani said that she reached out to her mother Krishna Mukherjee for inspiration. "I saw it as someone so connected to her roots. The purpose of this film is bigger than a box office success because it needs to create awareness around the stories which happen day in and out for parents outside the country."
She was speaking to Karan Johar who took to Instagram after watching the film. He wrote: "I have had the privilege of seeing this heartbreaking and massively courageous film. Hand on heart, This is Rani Mukerji’s best performance till date. To say that she is absolutely outstanding is still not completely describing her portrayal of an anguished and distraught mother. I don’t think there is a single parent in this world that will not be hugely affected and then vindicated in the viewing of this brilliant film."
Directed by Ashima Chibber, the film also stars Neena Gupta, Jim Sarbh, and Anirban Bhattacharya. It will hit theatres on 17th March 2023.
