Mumbai: A case has been filed against Ukrainian singer Uma Shanti for allegedly disrespecting Indian flag during a concert in Pune, a police official said on Tuesday.

The accused is the lead vocalist of ‘Shanti People’, a musical band that mixes EDM (electronic dance music) with Vedic mantras.

The alleged insult of the national flag took place at a musical event held in a club in Pune’s Mundhwa area on the eve of Independence Day.

Singer Shanti, who was holding the tricolour flag and waving it while performing at the concert, suddenly flung the flag into the audience, a Mundhwa police station official said.

As per media reports, the case was filed by Havaldar Tanaji Deshmukh after the video of the incident went viral on various social media platforms.

The singer has been booked under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act and the Maharashtra Police Act, according to the police.

The Ukrainian band, Shanti People, which was on its India tour, had already performed in Bengaluru and Bhopal last week. Their performance on Sunday was their second in the city of Pune after one in October last year.
