The historical epic movie The Woman King starring Viola Davis will be released in India on October 14. The movie will be released in English and Tamil. Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, the plot is inspired by a real-life all-female African fighting force called Agojie.

Being one of the very few documented female armies in modern history, the Fon military regiment was active from the 1600s to 1904. They were named Dahomey Amazons by the Western Europeans who encountered them during colonisation. The film tells the story of the battle they fought to protect the African kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s.

The Woman King is already being hailed as the Academy award contender of the season. It is also one of the two movies released in 2022 to have received an A + cinema score, one of the most prestigious and credible scores to be conferred based on audience surveys.

The film is also being lauded for being helmed by women in its various aspects. Lashana Lynch, the first Black woman to be cast as OO7 and Thuso Mbedu, an Emmy-winning actress are also playing crucial roles. Written by Dana Stevens and Maria Bello, the cinematography by Polly Morgan. It is produced by Cathy Schulman.
