Emma Watson of Happy Potter fame, who was appointed the UN Women Goodwill Ambassador, has taken to twitter to thank her fans, celebrity friends and family for their support of her HeForShe gender equality campaign.
The actress recently launched the campaign in New York by delivering a powerful and emotional speech at the UN headquarters during an event as part of the campaign which aimed to “mobilize men against gender inequalities”. The initiative is the first of its kind backed by the UN.
The campaign hashtag has reached 1.2 billion.
"Between 20th Sep & 2nd Oct there were 1.1million #HeForShe tweets from 750K different users, reaching 1.2 BILLION unique Twitter users”, she tweeted. This is the first time she has spoken out to thank the world for its support.
The actress also announced that the hashtag logo has been painted on the Twitter HQ walls. Several celebrities turned up for the glittery event and Watson was commended by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
"She's been using her magic wand in her movie. I hope she will use her magic wand to stop violence against women," he said to Watson, drawing laughs from the audience and a lovely smile from the actress.
The inspiring speech redefined feminism. Watson said that gender equality rights were to be considered as human rights and that it was an issue of men. She had also urged men to join the movement and spread the importance of equality between men and women.
Watson played the role of a smart, headstrong Hermoine Granger in the Harry Potter films.
HeForShe movement fights inequalities around the world. The campaign initially was led by women for women. But now men have also come forward extending support to eliminate inequalities and discriminations faced by the women. At a time, when violence against women is on a rise globally, the launch of such a movement surely relevant.
