Raigad: A 15-year-old student in Maharashtra lost his life after he was struck on the head by a javelin thrown by another student, during a practice session in Raigad on Wednesday afternoon, the police said.

The accident took place at the INT English School ground in Purar, Goregaon, during a taluka-level sports competition.

According to Assistant Police Inspector Shrikrushna Navale of the Goregaon police station, the boy, identified as Hujefa Daware, had thrown his javelin and was tying his shoelaces when another student inadvertently threw a javelin in his direction, piercing his head as he stood up.

“Around 12.30 pm, Daware threw the javelin and bent to tie his shoelaces. A student from the other side threw the javelin back in his direction unaware that Daware had bent down. When he rose to his feet, the javelin hit him on his head, “ Navale said.

The authorities are reviewing CCTV footage to identify the student responsible.

While it initially appears to be an accident, police sources are examining the safety rules for javelin play.

Typically, the area where the javelin is thrown should be a designated "no man's land”, said an officer, reports The Indian Express.

“In this case too, the accident occurred when the games had started. They should have been careful during the practice session as well. In case some negligence comes to the fore, a First Information Report will be registered in the matter. Currently, an accidental death report has been prepared,” a senior officer said.
