1852 revolt against Portuguese: Guard of honour in Goa fort

Panaji: At the Nanus Fort in Goa, a guard of honour was presented for the first time on the occasion of Republic Day on Thursday, commemorating the revolt against the Portuguese rule that happened in here 1852, PTI reported.
In the historic fort, located in Sattari taluka in North Goa district, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced that the guard of honour at the fort will now be a part of the state government's official functions on Republic Day every year.
Sawant told the media that the 1852 revolt led by freedom fighter Deepaji Rane would forever be etched in the annals of the coastal state's history. Rane had fought the Portuguese valiantly, resisting the colonial power from taking over Sattari.
It was on January 26, 1852, the Portuguese-controlled Nanus Fort was captured. The guard of honour is to commemorate that victory, the minister said. On December 19, 1961, India liberated Goa from Portuguese rule.
The minister said, "The events of 1852 and Deepaji Rane should be remembered forever."
He said that the state government wishes to restore the fort, which is in ruins now.
He said, "I appeal to locals to help us in acquiring land for the construction of a road to this fort. The Archaeological Survey of India or the State Archives and the Archaeology department will be requested to take up the restoration of the fort."
