20-year-old dies in MP after kite string slashes her throat

A 20-year-old woman lost her life in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh on Saturday after the string of a kite slit her throat. The string was coated with powdered glass and is commonly called the 'Chinese string'.

Additional Superintendent of Police Ravindra Varma said that the string slashed her throat as she was travelling on a scooter. She bled to death at Zero Point Bridge under Madhav Nagar police station limits. The friend with whom she was travelling is safe, the officer said.

Verma informed that a case has been registered in the matter. The police are searching for the person who was flying the kite and scanning the CCTV footage of the area. Action would also be taken against suppliers and sellers of the 'Chinese string', he added.

The Chinese string is made by coating the kite string with powdered glass. It is razor-sharp and can 'cut' other kites in the sky. However, several incidents of injury and death due to the string are reported every year around the Makar Sankranti festival. The use of it is also illegal in places.
