New Delhi: Dowry cases registered in the nation marked a sharp rise from 10,046 in 2020 to 13,534 cases a year later, reports say.

The data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) showed Uttar Pradesh reporting the highest number of incidents in the nation with 4,594 cases.

The number of dowry-related deaths showed a slight decline of 3.85% recording a total of 6,589 cases, compared to 6,843 cases in 2020, according to a report in The News Minute.

Uttar Pradesh reported the highest number of dowry deaths with 2,222 cases while Telangana had 175 dowry deaths becoming the highest among southern states with Kerala registering 9 cases.

As many as1, 845 cases were registered in Karnataka under the Dowry Prohibition Act last year, which is the highest among the southern states. Telangana had the lowest (5), while Kerala saw 12 times rise in the number of cases.

Andhra Pradesh, in the meantime, saw a steep decline by nearly 97%.

NCRB report says that 330 dowry death cases were closed because of insufficient evidence, last year.

As many as 1,086 cases under the Dowry Prohibition Act were closed lacking in evidence.
