BBC docu screening: 7-member panel to probe Delhi varsity ruckus

New Delhi: After the ruckus before the Arts Faculty at Delhi University on screening the controversial BBC documentary on Friday afternoon, the administration there has formed a seven-member committee to probe into the incident, PTI reported.

The committee, headed by DU Proctor Rajini Abbi, has been asked to submit its report to Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh by 5 pm on January 30.

A notification published by the university administration said that the vice-chancellor formed the committee to enforce discipline and to maintain law and order inside the campus.

The other six members of the committee are Professor Ajay Kumar Singh of the Department of Commerce, Professor Manoj Kumar Singh, Joint Proctor, Professor Sanjoy Roy of the Department of Social Work, Professor Rama, Principal of Hansraj College, Professor Dinesh Khattar, Principal of Kirorimal College, and Gaje Singh, Chief Security Officer, the notification suggested.

It said, "The Committee may specifically look into the incident of January 27, 2023, which occurred outside the Faculty of Arts and opposite gate No. 4, University of Delhi."

On Friday, a commotion broke out inside the university's mentioned area after students attempted the screening of the BBC Documentary "India: the Modi question" and police and university administration tried to thwart the screening. The Union government had banned the documentary, which proves Prime Minister Narendra Modi's active involvement in the 2002 Gujarat riots, which killed hundreds of Muslims, among others.

On Friday, Delhi Police detained 24 students affiliated with the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) were detained from the Delhi University's Arts Faculty, and a heavy police deployment was maintained in the North Campus.

According to university claims, "outsiders" were trying to screen the documentary and police were called to maintain discipline, law and order.
