In a bid to uphold India's democratic principles and promote responsible voting in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Archbishop Peter Machado of Bengaluru has called upon Christians to observe March 22 as a day of fasting and prayer.

Archbishop Machado, known for his advocacy of human rights, has been vocal in urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address issues such as divisive politics and hate speech within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He emphasizes the importance of electing leaders who transcend petty politics and uphold the fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution.

Highlighting the concerns of minority communities, Archbishop Machado stresses the need for official recognition of Scheduled Caste status for Dalit Christians and protection of the rights of other marginalized groups. He also calls upon the government to refrain from attempts to revoke the Scheduled Tribe status of Christian tribals.

Expressing dismay over the state of Indian politics, Archbishop Machado laments the erosion of democratic institutions, the undermining of federal structures, and the co-optation of media and investigative agencies. He warns against the proliferation of populism, polarization, and personality cults, which threaten the fabric of democracy.

J.A. Kanthraj, spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Bangalore, underscores Archbishop Machado's appeal to the Christian community in Karnataka to observe March 22 as a day of fasting and prayer. Kanthraj emphasizes the importance of invoking divine grace, strength, and wisdom to make informed electoral decisions for the betterment of the nation.
