Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced a caste census will be held after taking the views of all parties at a meeting on May 27. He added that the state government has started talking with every party and not everyone is on board.

He told the media that after the meeting on Friday, a proposal will be presented before the state cabinet. "Some of the parties have not replied to the call of the state government so far. We are waiting for their response," said the CM. He further said the government wants to discuss each and every issue related to a caste-based census. Suggestions from different political parties will be a great help.

Parties like the JD-U, the RJD, the Congress, the Left parties, and the AIMIM are in favour of the caste census. The BJP has raised objections and is not likely to attend the meeting. Tarkishore Prasad, Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, said the BJP is discussing the matter within the party and will soon take a call on it.

All parties except the BJP have been demanding a caste-based census in Bihar for a long time. An all-party delegation headed by CM Nitish Kumar had met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi eight months ago to discuss the matter.

The ruling BJP party is opposed to the caste census as the Centre has repeatedly called it a divisive exercise. Opposition parties in Bihar have been arguing that knowing the caste constitution will lead to better policies suited to help the neglected sections of society.

The progress in conducting the census allegedly came after RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav threatened to seize the campaign with a march to Delhi. The CM met with the opposition leader and shared details about a caste census. Yadav had met Kumar 10 days ago over the issue.

The RDJ alleges that the BJP is annoyed about its meeting with the ruling party leader and it led to the CBI raids on founder Lulu Yadav. "It was a warning to Nitish Kumar in case he planned to get close to the RDJ".
