Chennai: An unidentified gang hacked to death BJP's minority wing leader Balachander here on Tuesday.

The 30-year-old was the Chennai Central district secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party's Scheduled Caste wing, according to The Indian Express.

Reports say at around 7:30 pm the gang attacked him when Balachander was at a shop in Chintadripet.

After the attack, assailants fled the scene. The police reached the area after being alerted by a passerby.

He was declared brought dead by doctors at the nearby government hospital.

Police beefed up security in the area and a forensic team searched the spot.

Tamil Nadu BJP leader K Annamalai tweeted that no one was safe in the state.

He called up on the police to immediately arrest the gang.

BJP workers staged a sit-in protest at the hospital where the body was waiting for post-mortem.

BJP leader Nagarajan quipped if Chennai was the capital of murder.

He alleged that every day a similar incident reported across the state.

Balachander, he said, questioned the 'malpractices' in the area, alongside complaining to the police about a few people taking ' mamool' from shops including from his brother's, according to report.

He blamed the leader's death on the police's inaction on his complaint.

Chennai police commissioner Shankar Jiwal rejected the reports of 18 murders in Chennai in the last 20 days. He claimed 25 per cent reduction in murder cases.
