British education system creates servant class in India, says PM Modi

Varanasi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the British gave India an education system that was meant for creating a "servant class". He added that the system was designed to meet their own needs and a lot of that is still in practice with no change.
He was speaking at the inauguration of a three-day meeting organised by the Union Education Ministry with the University Grants Commission and the Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi. The nation leader was speaking on the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP).
The PM observed that the education system should not just focus on producing degree-holders. "It should focus on providing the nation with human resources needed to take India forward". He added that the purpose of the education system created in the country was only to provide jobs.
After Independence, there were some changes in it but a lot of them remained the same. We should create a system in our campuses that when these students arrive there in the next few years they get what they want, he added.
The PM further noted that children are now citing Google to counter others. "We have to delve into the details of the challenges and problems and find solutions. The NEP is opening doors for education in Indian languages. I have confidence that India could emerge as a world education destination".
He added that "innovative thoughts and new ideas" should be discussed at the summit, called the "Akhil Bharatiya Shiksha Samagam".
The summit brings together over 300 educationists from public and private universities to discuss the implementation of NEP 2020.
