The Election Commission on Friday informed that the bypoll to the Rajya Sabha seat from West Bengal shall be held on August 9. The seat was left vacant after Dinesh Trivedi resigned on February 12.

Then a Trinamool Congress member, Trivedi said that he is unable to do anything about the violence in West Bengal and feels suffocated within the house. His term in the Rajya Sabha was to end in April 2026. Trivedi later joined the BJP.

While the notification of the bypoll shall be issued on July 22, the poll would be held on August 9. The counting shall be held on the same day after polling ends.

The Election Commission had deferred several bypolls to the Lok Sabha and assembly seats, as well as legislative council polls in nine seats from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, in May, due to the second wave of the pandemic.
