The man was suspected to be killed over the vengeance that his marriage with the accused's sister was inter-caste, and their families disapproved of it. The deceased, Praveen, and Sharmi, who he married, eloped and registered their marriage in November 2023.

According to the news portal The News Minute, Praveen belonged to the Adi Dravidar community, which comes under Scheduled Caste, while Sharmi is Yadava caste, which comes under OBC.

Police say that Sharmi's brother Dinesh, along with his four friends, met Praveen at the bar on Saturday evening. The group had an argument with Praveen, and Dinesh and his friends pulled out knives, which they brought with them and attacked him. After the assault, the accused fled the scene.

Despite being rushed to the Government Hospital in Chrompet, Praveen succumbed to injuries.

Following a case being filed at the S10 Pallikaranai police station against the five accused, they were caught by the police on Sunday near Mambakkam.
