New Delhi: In a dramatic U-turn, the Central Animal Welfare Board (CAWB) withdrew the controversial Cow Hug Day circular on Friday after fresh directions from the Union government. The Center's proposal was to observe February 14, Valentine's day, as Cow Hug Day.

On Monday, the CAWB issued a circular calling for celebrating February 14 as 'Cow Hug Day'. CAWB Secretary SK Dutta said that cows are the backbone of Indian culture, rural economy and biodiversity and hugging them fills people with emotional richness and happiness.

Dutta said in the first notification, "We all know that cow is the backbone of Indian culture and rural economy, sustains our life represent cattle wealth and biodiversity. It is known as "Kamdhenu" and "Gaumata" because of its nourishing nature like mother, the giver of all, providing riches to humanity."

"Vedic traditions are almost on the verge of extinction due to the progress of western culture over time. The dazzle of western civilisation has made our physical culture and heritage almost forgotten."

"In view of the immense benefit of the cow, hugging with cow will bring emotional richness and hence will increase our individual & collective happiness. therefore, all the cow lovers may also celebrate the February 14 Cow Hug day keeping in mind the importance of mother cow and make life happy and full of positive energy," the notification read.

The CAWB notification invited flak, particularly on social media, making the Centre withdraw the call. However, Sangh Parivar factions welcomed the 'Cow Hug Day' call.
