China to build hydropower plant on Brahmaputra river: Neighbouring countries enraged

Chinese government's plan to build a hydropower plant on the Brahmaputra river has enraged its neighbouring countries, Bangladesh and India.

The proposal has been put forward in its 14th five-year plan, which will be implemented by next year. The official media on Sunday quoted the head of a Chinese company tasked to build the dam. The plan is expected to be officially approved by the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC) by next year.

China has already built small dams in the river. The new project will be built in the Medog region. This region lays close to India's Arunachal Pradesh. China claims that the dam will be effective for its border security.

The proposed dam is expected to generate power three times more than the three famous dams in the country. This new move of the Chinese government has evoked concerns in India and Bangladesh.
