Court grants Jignesh Mevani bail in case over tweeting on PM Moditext_fields
Jignesh Mevani, an independent MLA from Gujarat who was arrested for tweeting about Prime Minister Narendar Modi, was granted bail by a Kokrajhar Court. He was booked for posting a tweet saying the PM 'considered Godse as God'.
Kokrajhar First Class Judicial Magistrate Bhavna Kakoty granted him bail with several conditions. He was taken back to jail after the hearing and lawyers are working on the formalities to get him released.
Mevani's lawyers suspect that another case has been filed against him in neighbouring Barpeta district and that he is likely to be re-arrested. Manoj Bhagawati, head of the Congress's legal cell, said that it is unlikely Mevani will be released.
Mevani was arrested on April 19 and brought to Kokrajhar, Assam on transit remand. He was remanded to a three-day police custody on April 21 by the Kokrajhar Chief Judicial Magistrate. The Assam Police had sought 10 days' custody but Angshuman Bora, Mevani's counsel, argued that there was no "prima facie evidence for the charges".
Mevani is an Independent MLA who had pledged his support to the Congress in September 2021.
