Chhatarpur: A Dalit groom's wedding procession was interrupted by villagers in Madhya Pradesh because he chose to ride a horse. They threw stones at him even after two teams of policemen intervened.

Chhatarpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Amit Sanghi said that a case has been registered against 50 people from an OBC community and 20 of them have been named. He added that three policemen were also injured in the attack.

He added that the accused are charged under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, and under sections of the Indian Penal Code pertaining to assault, rioting, stone-throwing and damaging property. The police are trying to ensure peace in the village.

The incident took place on Monday evening. The groom was accompanied by 50 baraatis. He was going from Chaurai village, Chhatarpur to bride village Shahgarh in Sagar district. A group of villagers spotted the baraat and tried to get him off the horse. When he refused, the crowd got angry and started pelting stones at him.

The attack continued even after the police teams led by the SP reached the spot. It took a few hours to get the crowd to disperse. The baraat was then given police protection and reached the bride's home late at night.
