The Delhi High Court has taken up Delhi Police for their alleged harassment of a man and his family under the threat that they would be arrested. The complainant, identified as Zakir, had submitted that the police of Delhi's Dayalpur police station were threatening him and his family by claiming an FIR had been filed against them.

Additional Sessions Judge Sunil Chaudhary said that the police had "created fear" in the mind of a citizen regarding arrest and imprisonment under false pretences and had not followed any procedures in the matter.

"Thus, considering the facts, let show cause notice be issued to the officials of PS Dayalpur as to why proceedings be not initiated against them for payment of compensation to the applicant for their conduct," the judge said in an order dated October 22. In a reply filed to his plea, the police submitted that no cognizable offence was found committed by Zakir and no FIR has been registered against him, adding that Zakir's father was not harassed rather he was intimated about the complaint.
