DMK urges PM Modi to apply the Uniform Civil Code to ‘Hindus first’

New Delhi: Prime Minister Modi’s pitch for uniform civil code has ruffled the Opposition parties and the congress has quickly called out the BJP.
Now its ally the DMK has joined the chorus to question the move as its top leader urging PM Modi to first introduce the code to the Hindu religion, NDTV reported.
DMK's TKS Elangovan has said people belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Tribes should be allowed to perform pooja in temples.
‘Uniform Civil Code should be first introduced in the Hindu religion. Every person including Scheduled Castes and Tribes should be allowed to perform pooja in any temple in the country. We don't want UCC (uniform Civil Code) only because the Constitution has given protection to every religion, TKS Elangovan was quoted as saying.
The Congress general secretary KC Venugopal urged PM Modi to answer about ‘ poverty, price rise and unemployment.
‘He never speaks on Manipur issue. The whole state is burning. He is just distracting people from all these issues,’ he reportedly said.
Although, Uniform Civil Code has been on the BJP’s agenda for long, the matter has suddenly sparked a national discussion after PM Modi raised it after his foreign travel.
PM Modi reportedly said that having ‘different rules for different members of a family’ does not work.
He asked why ‘Tripple Talaq’ is not practiced in the Muslim majority countries including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Qatar, Jordan and Syria.
In Egypt, he said, the custom was abolished some 80-90 years ago nevertheless 90 percent of the nation is Sunni Muslims.
Battering the Opposition, PM Modi said those in favour of Tripple Talaq are doing injustice to Muslim daughters.
Uniform Civil Code envisages to replace religion-based personal laws, rules of inheritance, adoption and succession.
